Darrell Proctor II/MNYC Speaker
OKMULGEE, Okla. — Hensci! The Mvskoke Nation Youth Council (MNYC) has been very busy during the month of June. We had our second annual Mvskoke Youth Awards banquet on June 20. The MNYC high school and college graduates recognized were Laura Mason, Claudia McHenry, Sacha McGriff and Amberly Proctor.
The Mvnettvlke Onaya Awards (Youth Visionary) were given to Laura Mason, Iesha Phillips, Amberly Proctor and Cody Minyard. The Vculvlke Mvnettvlke Emvnicv Awards (Old Who Helps the Young) were given to Lauren Randall, Mary Jones, John Brown and Justin Giles.
The outstanding male and female MNYC members were awarded to Darrell Proctor II and Claudia McHenry. The youth also recognized all of the departments within the Muscogee (Creek) Nation who have contributed and helped with the youth council. We would like to give a special thanks to Buckeye Creek Baptist Church for providing dinner for the evening.
The MNYC enjoyed helping out at this year’s festival. Volunteers were able to help out at the Living Legends ceremony and at the concession for the adult and youth 3-on-3 basketball, while others ran the dunk tank. The dunk tank featured National Council members, Youth Council members and youth services workers. We would like to give a special thanks to the National Council and all of the volunteers for offering their time for the youth.
Our next big event will be the UNITY Conference in Denver, Colorado. One of the activities at UNITY involves a cultural exchange night. The MNYC will host a fashion show as their activity. This will consist of presenting Creek clothing from pre-removal to present day. The MNYC wanted to become better educated on the traditional clothing topic, so we invited Cherrah Giles to our last Council meeting to come and make a presentation over the clothing. She taught us about the different styles of clothing and what they were used for and even showed us examples. It was very educational and we are very thankful for her lesson. We are excited for the UNITY Conference and look forward to representing the Muscogee (Creek) Nation.
We are thankful for the opportunities and support we have been given and hope to continue to make our people proud. Mvtekusen makit! Mvto!
