OKMULGEE, Okla. — Hensci! The Mvskoke Nation Youth Council has been very busy this month. Last week was National Volunteer Week, as well as Earth Day on April 22.
Earth Day is an opportunity for people around the world to show their support for environmental protection. The Youth Council spent Earth Day cleaning up along the highway near the Okmulgee Indian Health Clinic. On this day, the youth also paid tribute to Dace Tiger, a member of the Youth Council, by planting a rose bush in his honor.
The next big event the Youth Council is planning is the Vietnam Veteran Parade. This event is scheduled for May 20 immediately after the National Council meeting and is open to any Vietnam Veteran. The Youth Council designed this parade to honor veterans who did not have a welcome home celebration when they came back from the war, and will be a small token of appreciation and give them the thanks that they deserve.
The Youth Council has also been active in statewide events. Several members of the Youth Council participated in the Oklahoma Native Youth Language Fair on April 4. This event was held at the Sam Noble Museum in Norman, Okla. Several youth submitted art that reflected the Mvskoke language. They also performed two songs in the Mvskoke language for tribes from all over Oklahoma.
Recently, the Southern Plains region of UNITY had a conference in Tulsa, and the Youth Council was invited to make a presentation. The presentation involved singing Creek songs along with giving information about traditional Creek churches and ceremonial grounds. The Youth Council was able to share with all of the other tribes about our customs and traditions.
We are thankful for the opportunities and support we have been given and hope to continue to make our people proud. Mvtekusen makit! Mvto!
The Youth Council meets on the second Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. at the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Mound Building.
