Challenge bowl limits number of teams

OKMULGEE, Oklahoma — The College of the Muscogee Nation hosted the annual Muscogee (Creek) Nation Challenge Bowl throughout the month of February.

The annual academic competition is comprised of three divisions: high school, middle school and elementary that promotes and tests students’ knowledge about MCN culture, history and language.

“This event is great, it teaches the kids about their history beyond what they learn in Oklahoma History class,” said Coweta’s High School team sponsor Rick Poindexter.

Teams are made up of four members, one alternate and one team sponsor with participation open to any Native student residing within MCN boundaries.

With each passing year, the event has steadily grown to the point where this year a 4-team limit was placed on participating schools and communities.

“We don’t want to limit it, but we had a space issue,” said Johnson O’Malley Program Director Regina Keith.

Keith said she has seen steady growth since 2008 and admits with each passing event it has become more difficult, logistically.
