OKMULGEE, Oklahoma — Muscogee (Creek) citizen and University of Central Oklahoma student Claudia McHenry was crowned Miss Native American UCO in November.

The pageant was held to celebrate Native American Heritage Month and the culture of the tribes represented on campus.

According to a UCO press release, McHenry is studying to receive her bachelor’s degree in business and legal studies and an active member of the UCO Native American Student Association.

She is also the Speaker for the Mvskoke Nation Youth Council.

In a November MNYC update, McHenry said her goals in her capacity as Speaker are to get more Mvskoke youth involved, start more projects and involve more adults in the Council’s activities.

She said she felt honored to represent not only her school, but also her Mvskoke Etvlwv.

McHenry said she wanted to run to become more involved with her campus.

“My roommate and I both ran and it was an amazing experience, we both got closer and we also made amazing connections with other native women,” she said.

McHenry said she has big plans to start connecting with citizens in the Oklahoma City metro area and get the Native students connected with one another as well.
