Find the good thing to thwart a bad day

Darren DeLaune/Reporter

OKMULGEE, Oklahoma — Hello everyone! How are you all doing?

It has been a rough two months for everyone. A lot of things have been going on in our country. Not only talking about the weather, but everything. Shutdowns, influenza, shootings.

Most recently, we had another shooting in Parkland, Florida where 17 people died. To date (and at the time of this writing) there have been numerous school shootings. How many? One or more is too many. That is the answer.

What is happening everyone?

This shooting that took place in Florida happened in what was voted the safest place in the state last year. What does that tell you? It can happen anywhere.

What can we do about it? I can only voice something but will it fall on deaf ears? The better question is, with the voice of the survivors of these shootings and the school shootings in the past fall on deaf ears?

Is it stricter gun control? Is it the Federal Bureau of Investigation carrying out their assignment if there is a call in about someone?

The same questions will repeat themselves. Is it mental health? Video games? Music?

We shall wait and see.

Another thing I want to bring up is, what happens in the next few weeks after this is done and the news stories have moved on? Do we forget about them?

Or do we talk about it on its one-year anniversary?

I hope not.

That was one of the bad things that has happened and is known nationally. Is there any good news?

Good news going once? Good news going twice?

I think I have one.

I met a woman who is dealing with an illness that causes temporary paralysis. Temporary can mean a lot of things. She is meeting many goals to do what she can to get full mobility. That is great news!

A mother’s illness and a passion for music helped a citizen find his love for music.

There is good news out there everyone, you just have to look.

I have two quotes for everyone. First one is from the amazing and honorable Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“Darkness cannot drive out Darkness; Only Light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only Love can do that.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Is there a light? Yes, there is. We have to see what light it is though. We have to find these answers.

Is there hate in the world? Of course, there will always be. But like Dr. King said, love can drive it out. Is there love in the world? We all know that answer. There is. It is around us.

My next one is unknown but I have to thank my friend for posting it on her Facebook (it was on my storyline).

“Every day may not be good, but find something good in every day.” – Unknown

We all can find one good thing in everyday. It might not turn everything around, but there is that small ray of sunlight for something.

Here are some examples from me for my good day. When I call my daughter and I hear, “Hi daddy.”

Another thing I find good in a day is when I beat Mvskoke Media’s Native ‘News Today’ host in a game of basketball (that is a great day).

One good thing out of a day is being able to write to you all, the readers. Once a column is finished that is the best part.

So do me a favor. Find a good thing out of your day and smile about it. Because that smile will help someone find his or her good thing out of a bad day.

I love you all. Take care and see you next column.
