Water released from Keystone Dam affecting MCN jurisdiction, property
OKMULGEE, Oklahoma —Principal Chief James Floyd declared a state of emergency May 28 for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation.
Due to heavy rains, flooding has occurred within the MCN jurisdiction.
Large volumes of water have been released from the Keystone Dam by the United State Army Corps of Engineers, which has resulted in flooding of the Arkansas River.
As of May 27, water release will continue by the Corps of Engineers resulting in more flooding for the river and surrounding areas.
In an executive order, Floyd stated MCN would coordinate with state, local and federal agencies to assist with flood-related efforts.
‘Immediate attention is require to protect public health, reduce further damage, insure public safety and render emergency relief,’ Floyd stated.
‘It is vital for the [MCN] to utilize its resources and services to not only assist our citizens with needs but also to assist the needs of our local communities to ensure the safety and security of all persons affected…’
The River Spirit Casino and Resort took flood precautions May 22 with the evacuation of guests and staff.
According to a release, River Spirit was built with the 100-year floodplain in mind with an elevation level intended to withstand 250,000 cubic feet per second in order for all areas to be dry.
As of May 28, the current water release is 275,000 cubic feet per second. The Resort Pool deck has been compromised with floodwater, which has also begun to seep into the interior of the building at the pool deck level with the indoor/outdoor Tiki Bar Dining and Resort Spa.
The Resort Hotel, the casino itself and its restaurants; Margaritaville and Ruth’s Chris are at an elevation 13 feet higher than the resort pool deck.
The casino’s loading docks, storage area and mechanical management located at Level 00 has been impacted as well as the south parking lot and ground level south to north driveway in front of the subterranean parking garage.
River Spirit employees have been approved for their scheduled hours through June 5 for payroll date June 13. Margaritaville and Ruth’s Chris will also pay their employees until additional information is available.
According to River Spirit, security measures have been taken with additional security by Tulsa Police Department on the perimeters of the property.
