Week long event reward for upgrades to facility
OKMULGEE, Oklahoma — The Muscogee (Creek) Nation Mvskoke Dome is not slowing down anytime soon.
With the recent upgrades that have been made MCN Tourism & Recreation is hard at work with all the extra activities added to the schedule.
One of the activities is the Okmulgee County Basketball Tournament recently held Jan. 21-26.
Each year eight schools meet up for the week-long event to see who has the best basketball team in the county.
In previous years, the tournament has been held at Brock Gymnasium, home of the Okmulgee Bulldogs.
That was until this year.
Decisions were made by representatives of the schools and MCN to have the tournament at the Dome.
“It is an exciting moment,” TR Director Kyle Lee said. “Seeing all the upgrades for the Dome being put to use with activities such as the Okmulgee County Tournament.”
Lee said talks began to happen about using the Dome as the location for the tournament back in 2017.
“I spoke with (MCN Principal) Chief (James) Floyd about the upgrades that we could do to the Dome,” he said. “If we did those things there were big chances to bring in more activities.”
Lee said the County Tournament was one of the big goals for MCN.
“We didn’t expect to get the tournament this year but we got it quicker than we thought,” he said. “We are excited with all the partnerships that we have with the schools here in Okmulgee County.”
Kaylee Byrd is in her first year as the head ladies basketball coach for Preston Public School.
“My girls have been very excited and have been talking about it for the last month,” Byrd said. “It is such a wonderful facility with an awesome atmosphere.”
Lee said two goals for the Dome are to make it a quality facility that is accessible to the public.
“We have the support of leadership and can’t be more excited for the things to come,” he said.
