Citizen receieves funds to expand business
TULSA, Oklahoma– Muscogee (Creek) Nation citizen Leon Thompson Jr., manages Leon’s Smoke Shack a BBQ joint that was recently listed Top 10 BBQ places in Tulsa, OK.
As a child, Thompson spent a lot of time with his mom. She had a small charcoil grill and when she was cooking Thompson would be watching and learning things from her. He has been cooking for 45 years, and the restaurant has been opened for five and a half years.
Thompson was inqured and directed to the Mvskoke Loan Fund to assist him. The funds he received from MLF, allowed him to purchase a food truck.
“We have only ran the truck for a week and the season for food trucks is almost over,” Thompson said. “Food truck season will not start back up until the spring, but what we are hoping to do is set up around the local businesses as well as some hospitals.”
Thomspon stated that their specialty would be the Slap Potato. This serving consists of a baked potato, with sour cream or butter, a choice of meats (brisket, pulled pork, hot link sausage), with the exception of ribs, then it is topped off with BBQ sauce and ranch dressing.
Before going into business with his restaurant, Thompson and his brother had a concession trailer that they ran during the summer months for a couple of years. They were supposed to open the restaurant together but Thompson’s brother did not feel comfortable leaving his job.
“My wife and I opened up the restaurant, it is going great,” Thompson said. “We do not do any type of marketing or advertising, it is all word of mouth and it is growing at a steady pace.”
Leon’s Smoke Shack was selected in the top 10 BBQ places in Tulsa a couple of weeks ago. Thompson said, “What people will find at Leon’s Smoke Shack is the service is excellent, the food is excellent and the atmosphere is conducive to what we do, we play a lot of jazz music.”
Leon’s Smoke Shack BBQ is located at 601 S. Sheridan Rd, Tulsa, OK 74112.
