Event set for start of Festival weekend
OKMULGEE, Oklahoma — Festival time at Muscogee (Creek) Nation has always been known as a week when citizens from all over can come “back home” and re-connect with the tribe.
The MCN Department of Higher Education is counting on these citizens including some of the best and brightest in the world of academia for an event during Festival.
The department will kick off Festival weekend with the first annual Muscogee (Creek) Nation Scholars Forum June 21 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Mound Building in Okmulgee.
Higher Education Manager Pete Coser, Jr. said the forum is being held to connect current master’s and doctoral program citizen scholars with MCN.
“The goal of it is to attract these scholars back to MCN for future employment and to be contributors,” Coser said. “It will also give citizens a chance to hear about current scholars’ projects and initiatives, and for scholars to participate and visit with tribal leadership.”
He also said the date following on Festival weekend was no coincidence.
“We were actually looking for a perfect time and place to hold it and after reviewing everything and after visiting with the Festival committee, that’s when we looked at Thursday morning,” Coser said. “With it being the first day (of the Festival) and in the morning, it will then allow scholars and their families to enjoy the rest of the weekend.”
