OKMULGEE, Oklahoma — Hensci! It has been a great month for the Mvskoke Nation Youth Council (MNYC).

The Mvskoke Youth Choir had the opportunity to sing at the state Johnson O’Malley conference banquet. We were very appreciative for the invitation and the opportunity to showcase our Mvskoke hymns. Everyone did a great job singing and we enjoyed the banquet.

Members of the choir also participated in the Oklahoma Native American Youth Language Fair and won 1st place for Traditional Hymn in the High School Small Group Category. Those choir members include, Tehilla Wind, Charles Mason, Mahiya Ramirez, Louisa Harjo and Sutv Harjo. Other awards received include Sutv Harjo 1st place in Middle School Comic Strips, Louisa Harjo 2nd place in High School Posters, Mahiya Ramirez 3rd place in High School Spoken Poetry, Jay Fife 1st place in High School Spoken Poetry and 1st place in High School Spoken Language.

We are would like to thank our youth mentor Bugsy Barnoskie for working with the choir and also Oscar Harjo with the Mvskoke Language program for helping these MNYC members prepare for competition.

On April 21, MNYC is hosting the Mvskoke Veterans Breakfast from 8 – 10:30 a.m. at the Mvskoke Dome. We would like to invite all Mvskoke veterans to this event. Space is limited to the first 75 veterans so please call Youth Services at: 918-549-2557 to pre-register.

A fun and important event coming up is Creekchella, which will be held on May 5 at the Mvskoke Dome. Creekchella is a wellness music festival with the goal of raising awareness for mental health. There will be food, youth vendors and live music. There will also be a scavenger hunt, a kickball tournament and a resource fair. The festival is free and open to everyone.

We would also like to give a shout out to YC member Alex Davis for receiving Jenks Native American Education Student of the Year award! Congratulations!
