Darrell Proctor II/MNYC Speaker

OKMULGEE, Oklahoma — Hensci! Things have slowed down quite a bit this month for the Mvskoke Nation Youth Council (MNYC). Everyone has gone back to school and is settling into their busy schedules.

Our only event for the month of August was our regular MNYC meeting. We had a visitor at this month’s meeting from the United National Indian Tribal Youth (UNITY) executive committee. The executive committee has representatives from each region in the country. The MNYC is part of the Southern Plains region consisting of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas youth councils.

The Southern Plains representative for the year is former Miss Muscogee (Creek) Nation Brittany McKane. We were very grateful that Brittany took the time to come and inform us on current issues while listening to our feedback and ideas.

This month we also had the pleasure of meeting Oske Lowe and visiting with his family when we delivered his generator and the proceeds from his bake sale fundraiser. Mvto again to all who donated to support Oske Lowe.

We would like to say congratulations to Nancy Deere-Turney, Karen Rodriguez-McGirt, Erin Bunner, Louisa Harjo and Iesha Phillips.

Nancy was selected as a 2017 Shriver Warrior. Marguerite Casey Foundation presented 19 young community leaders with the Sargent Shriver Warriors Against Poverty Leadership Award, in honor of their vision, passion and dedication to improving the lives of families in their communities.

Karen and Erin were selected to the College Board Youth Advisory Council on Access to Higher Education. Ninety-one youth were selected to serve on the council out of over 800 applications.

Louisa and Iesha were selected to the For Girls Becoming: Art Mentorship Program with the Mvskoke Arts Association. Congratulations, again!

Mvtekusen makit! Mvto!
