OKMULGEE, Oklahoma — Hensci! It has been a great month for the Mvskoke Nation Youth Council (MNYC). At last month’s meeting, Brooklyn Alexander and Joseph Kahbeah gave a report on the 2018 UNITY Midyear Conference held in Tempe, Arizona. Thank you for representing the MNYC and for giving a report on the MNYC activities at the conference.

We would like to say congratulations to the MNYC Challenge Bowl team for getting second place in this year’s high school competition. The team members were Jay Fife, Joseph Kahbeah, Tafv Sanders, Erin Bunner and Taylor Tramel. We would also like to congratulate MNYC members Jay Fife and Erin Bunner for receiving the Belvin Hill Scholarship.

As part of the monthly field trips for the Culture and Language Committee, members of the MNYC took a trip to attend the Broken Arrow Winter Stomp Dance on Jan. 19. Another trip was taken to Weogufkee Indian Baptist Church to attend their Sunday service on Jan. 21.

We would like to congratulate MNYC members Mahiya Ramirez, Louisa Harjo and Iesha Phillips on completing the For Girls Becoming Arts Mentorship Program! Thanks to Joy Harjo and Jennifer Forester for leading this program and encouraging our Mvskoke women to pursue their talents.

Mvskoke Nation Youth Services was recognized along with Eufaula Boarding School and the College of the Muscogee Nation as Suicide Prevention Community Champions. Thank you for all the work you do with the youth and suicide prevention.

We would like to invite any Mvskoke youth ages 12-24 to join the Mvskoke Youth Choir. If interested, please contact Phillip (Bugsy) Barnoski at: 918-758-8388. The choir meets every Wednesday evening for practice at 6:30 p.m. at the MNYS office, which is located at 112 E. 6th St., in Okmulgee.

Finally, we would like to invite all youth ages 12-18 to the Native Love Dance which is set for Feb. 16, from 6 – 9 p.m. at the Mvskoke Dome in Okmulgee.
