Wahnee selected as first intern
OKMULGEE, Oklahoma — Mvskoke Media has created an intern scholarship program for college students pursuing a degree in graphic design, marketing or journalism.
The internship is a requirement to receive the $2,000 Mvskoke Media scholarship from the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Scholarship Foundation. It is a 20 hours-per-week, 12-week, unpaid position aimed at tailoring skills, education and experience to fit the requirements of a position in media.
“I think the best way to address this is to build our own base of qualified candidates while also demonstrating that there is a future for them within the particular fields in which they are interested,” Mvskoke Media Manager Sterling Cosper said.
Jessica Wahnee is a student at the Oklahoma State University- Institute of Technology in the visual communications department, as well as a Muscogee (Creek) citizen. She was selected as the intern for the fall 2017 semester.
Wahnee said she learned a lot of hands-on skills she could not get from a classroom, as well as how to handle the client process from beginning to completion.
“It was different,” she said.
Wahnee said in school it was more about developing skills to use specific tools or programs and the Mvskoke Media internship was more about applying those skills while working with clients.
Other responsibilities she had included designing brochures, clothing, graphics and logos.
“Internships are usually regarded as a one-way learning opportunity, but what I hope to see is young people coming to this department with new ideas we don’t have and also the most up-to-date industry training fresh out of academia and other sectors that our current staff and myself have not been exposed to,” Cosper said.
The Mvskoke Media internship position is an unpaid, part-time, seasonal position that lasts 12 weeks.
If the student successfully completes the internship, they will receive the Mvskoke Media scholarship.
Candidates must be Muscogee (Creek) citizens, at least 18-years-old and enrolled in a higher education journalism, marketing or graphic design program. Candidates are also required to pass a background check and drug test.
