Muscogee veteran opens dispensary

OKMULGEE, Oklahoma — Since the passing of State Question 788 in 2018, which legalized cannabis use for medical purposes, marijuana dispensaries have become commonplace throughout the state.
With the proverbial field quickly filling with players, how does a shop stand out?
Muscogee (Creek) citizen Bugsy Barnoski believes it is about customer service and a sincere understanding of the product and its benefits.
Barnoski, is set to open ‘Okgee Budz,’ Muskogee’s newest dispensary, by the end of August.
“It’s about helping people by educating them about all the benefits of marijuana,” he said.
According to Barnoski, he began educating himself on the plants medicinal value when he saw a story of children with epilepsy being treated with cannabis and reporting amazing results.
“It was Charlotte’s Web, that got me interested, the [marijuana] strain not the book… that was the flower or extract that was used to help these kids,” he remembered.
Barnoski has since been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia, which he began treating with marijuana upon retiring from the United States Marine Corps.
“I was taking around 13 different pills and two shots coming out of the Marine Corps,” he said.
He said once he began treating his condition with cannabis, even his Veteran’s Administration (VA) doctor noticed the difference.
“The VA even noticed I was having less inflammation and my joints weren’t getting too bad,” he said.
Barnoski hopes his story inspires people to approach medical marijuana with an open mind and view it as a legitimate medicine.
“There is still a stigma attached to it, and that’s what I want to help change,” he said.
Okgee Budz is located at 301 South Main in Muskogee and is expected to open in mid-August.
