Update on downtown Okmulgee

OKMULGEE, Oklahoma — Okmulgee Main Street Director Heather Sumner shared an update on how downtown Okmulgee is flourishing.

Currently, OMS is comprised of over 33 buildings that were sold in the historic district.

One of the big projects, which took three years to complete, was dedicated Nov. 28.

“The big deal for us now was the GOPO (Grand Old Post Office Student Housing) finally being finished and opened,” Sumner said. “We will have 75 students living there.”

According to the Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology’s website, GOPO is the newest university housing option for students who are attending OSUIT.

It is located downtown Okmulgee on Grand Avenue and Fifth Street.

“Students will start moving in this upcoming January,” Sumner said.

Sumner mentioned there would be some new restaurants on the square downtown as well.

“We will have one that is going to be opening on Dec. 11,” she said. “Another one will be opening in February and they are trying to get everything done as quick as possible.”

Sumner thinks these restaurants will have good timing with the students who will be moving to Okmulgee.

“The food will be priced right for the students,” she said.

She also spoke about the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Council House renovations and is excited about the completion.

“Just a look from the outside, it is beautiful,” Sumner said.

She said OMS is talking to the Oklahoma Department of Commerce about day bus tours when the Council House is completed.

“We want to get that going once the Council House opens back up,” Sumner said.

OMS is also having a Sparkle Shopping Spree going on during the Christmas season.

“We call it a shop local event,” she said.

Sumner said anyone can go to a business that is participating in the Sparkle Shopping Spree and for every $10 they spend, they get tickets for a cash prize drawing.

“We will do drawings every Friday in December,” she said. “It is great for the businesses and the people who shop there.”
