OKMULGEE, Oklahoma — The Okmulgee County Tournament wrapped up its debut at the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Mvskoke Dome in January.

The buzz around the tournament’s wrap-up was the venue’s ability to host the contest.

The Dome is far from retirement when it comes to hosting events.

During the tournament, MCN Tourism and Recreation Director Kyle Lee said they received the call about being a host site for the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activity Association basketball playoffs for the Class B regionals. The week after he received a call about the Class 3A Area. They will both be held at Mvskoke Dome.

“This is one of the things we were hoping to get,” he said. “We are excited they chose us to be one of the host sites.”

Lee said they did not expect to be hosting any tournaments or playoff games this quickly, but are happy they are getting the calls.

“It was a nice surprise,” he said. “We were thinking about playoffs for next year.”

David Glover, assistant of the OSSAA, who is in charge of the Class B-AAAA basketball playoffs heard through word of mouth about the Dome hosting the Okmulgee Co. Tournament last month and spoke with MCN about hosting a regional site.

“It was in the area where I was needing a regional site,” Glover said. “They were gracious enough to say yes.”

He also said they are excited to get a location like the Dome to host regionals and area.

“Anytime we get a nice, new facility to be a host for us, it is a real pleasure,” Glover said.

Lee said TR couldn’t wait to do more things at the Dome.

“This is what we were wanting the Dome to be doing,” he said. “Anyway it can help bring in revenue for the tribe and let the citizen’s see what we have here for them is a plus.”

Among the teams that fans could possibly see at the Dome out of the Class B Regional bracket are the Varnum boys and girls teams, ranked 6th and 3rd in the state respectively.

Notable teams in the Class 3A Area II bracket that could possibly compete at the Dome include Morris, Eufaula, Kellyville and Tahlequah/Sequoyah.

The Class B Regionals will be held Feb. 14-16. The Class 3A Area will be held Feb. 28-March 2.

TR is asking once again for volunteers to help with the games. For more information on hours, contact Kyle Lee at: 918-732-7990 or email at: kylee@mcn-nsn.gov.
