Nation to receive federal aid following the severe storm season

OKMULGEE, Oklahoma — On May 7, President Donald Trump declared that a major disaster exists for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and approved federal aid to supplement the Nation’s efforts in the areas affected by severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding caused by May and June storms.
Federal funding is available to the MCN and other, unnamed, nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe weather.
Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for projects that help to prevent, reduce or control adverse environmental effects in the future.
“It will be a lot of work but it will be a good thing with helping us rebuild some of the infrastructure that had been damaged,” MCN Emergency Management Supervisor James Nichols said.
MCN Lighthorse Police Department, Emergency Management Department, Arbor Care and the Tribal Driveways Department will also receive assistance, as they were all apart of the disaster relief and recovery efforts.
According to Nichols it has not been determined how much money the Nation will receive.
