CMN basketball team to make initial appearance in tournament

OKMULGEE, Oklahoma — The College of the Muscogee Nation Ravens basketball teams will be making their first appearance at the American Indian Higher Education Consortium National Basketball Tournament March 20-24 at Little Big Horn College in Crow Agency, Montana.

AIHEC’s conference offers a wide range of competitions from athletics to arts and academics.

According to CMN Instructor and coach Mackie Moore, the basketball teams were initially started for intramural purposes, though the college had plans to eventually compete at the tournament.

“We’ve been going and competing in different competitions, knowledge bowl, volleyball, art,” Moore said. “But we’ve all had a goal of having basketball…”

He said he was approached by students and asked if there was a possibility to participate in the upcoming event.

The Ravens hold practice in the Mvskoke Dome at the only time available, 8 o’clock in the morning.

“They’ve been really committed this past Fall semester and this Spring semester,” Moore said.

CMN will be one of 38 tribal colleges attending AIHEC, which begins March 16th in Billings, Montana.

CMN will send two teams comprised of 11 to 12 men and 13 to 14 women and will travel to LBHC, located an hour outside Billings.
