OKMULGEE, Oklahoma — The sixth annual Muscogee (Creek) Nation All-Indian Livestock Show was held Jan. 25-27 at the Okfuskee County Fairgrounds in Okemah.

This year saw the addition of a third day for the competition.

“We’ve grown to the point that we needed to add another day to fit everything in,” MCN Youth Ag Program Manager Billy Haltom said.

The three-day event began Friday with the sheep/goat portion, swine was shown on Saturday and the competition concluded with cattle on Sunday.

According to Haltom, more than 500 students participated in this years show, doubling the amount of participants from last year.

“If we continue to grow at this rate we’re going to outgrow our facility and we might have to move the show somewhere else just because of our sheer numbers,” Haltom said.

The yearly show is open to all Muscogee (Creek) youth in the state as well as any Native youth with a tribal enrollment card living within MCN boundaries or Seminole County.

Another unique aspect of the annual show is that the organizing body makes no money from the event.

“This is a very popular show because we give away so many different things… and we pay back 100 percent of the entry fees to the [winners],” Haltom explained.
