Camp aimed at providing inspiration to community
OKMULGEE, Oklahoma — The Oklahoma City Thunder recently made news about honoring the Native American heritage with their ‘City Edition’ jersey.
Now they are taking another step with the Oklahoma City Thunder Youth Basketball making a return to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Mvskoke Dome in Okmulgee Nov. 21 with its Hustle Camp.
Manager of Youth Basketball Programs Michelle Matthews spoke about Native American Month and how the OKC Thunder wanted to be a part of that with the youth.
“Throughout this month, we know that there will be events that are meant to amplify the meaning and celebration of Native American heritage month,” she said. “We knew we wanted to be a part of that celebration.”
The Play On Edition is designed to push young athletes to improve their on-court skills as well as off-court life skills and use basketball as inspiration.
“They will receive a camp T-shirt, which is inspired from the Native American city jersey edition 2018-19,” Matthews said.
She said they will also receive a basketball, water bottle and a pair of socks.
“When the kids walk out of the doors of the Mvskoke Dome, we hope they are not only better basketball players but can take extreme pride in their heritage, their background and their Native community,” Matthews said.
The cost is $55 per camper. For more information, email: firstname.lastname@example.org comments
